WHEREAS since opening its doors in the fall of 1998, The Manchester Academic Charter School has provided quality education for elementary and middle school age children. With consistent improvements to students' standardized test scores, the school has recently received a Blue Ribbon award for academic excellence from the U.S. Department of Education; and
WHEREAS the Northside charter school is the only school in the city of Pittsburgh to be commended with this award in 2008, and is the first school in the region to receive the honor; and
WHEREAS developed by local parents, community members, and staff from the Manchester Youth Development Center, the school was envisioned as a place for children of the Northside to get a more personalized education; and
WHEREAS the school's curriculum is closely aligned with its mission statement which aims to empower each child to grow to be an essential component of his or her community. Incorporating practical classes such as technology and Spanish into the curriculum allows the students to be more prepared for success in their futures in both academics and in today's workforce.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby wish to commend the Manchester Academic Charter School for their commitment to improving the education of the city's youth and earning national recognition as a 2008 Blue Ribbon Award winner; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim today, October 14, 2008, as Manchester Academic Charter School Day in the City of Pittsburgh, and presents the school with a key to the city for their exemplary approach toward education.
