WHEREAS, Red Ribbon week is a national program that honors fallen DEA Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camerena and is a grassroots effort to protect children from the dangers of drugs and alcohol; and
WHEREAS, the first nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign was organized in 1988 by the National Family Partnership; and
WHEREAS, under the guidance of South Hills Middle School Principal Dr. Deborah Cox and Student Service Coordinator Timothy Pail, Student Council and National Junior Honor Society students from grades 6-8 are hanging red ribbons throughout the community to raise awareness of being drug free; and
WHEREAS, on the week of October 22nd, 2007 planned events, parent awareness and a "pledge to be drug free" is initiated and signed by all students; and
WHEREAS, this commitment by the South Hills Middle School, which is now visible in communities, will be an ongoing annual effort to make the last week in October Red Ribbon Awareness Week for years to come; and
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates and commends the Pittsburgh South Hills Middle School principal, Student Service Coordinator, parents, and students for bringing this effort and awareness to the public of the South Hills communities.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare that Tuesday, October 23, 2007 to be "South Hills Middle School Red Ribbon Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
