WHEREAS, St. Henry's Lyceum was founded in August 1933 as a men’s-only club for the St. Henry’s church choir,

WHEREAS, the church was located on the top floor of the St. Henry’s school on Charcot Street, while the St. Henry’s Lyceum was a gathering space housed in the school’s basement; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Lyceum was moved to 2226 Arlington Avenue, where it has served as a community venue since the 1940's, and in its new location, the Lyceum had a duckpin bowling space with a 6-lane alley downstairs and 4-lane alley upstairs; and,

 

WHEREAS, women of Arlington gained the ability to become social members of the Lyceum and founded the women's bowling league in 1984, and were able to access the Lyceum’s bar in 1989; and,

 

WHEREAS, this space evolved to host regular pin bowling and founded couple’s, men’s, and women’s leagues; and,

 

WHEREAS, the 4 lane alley downstairs was transitioned into a hall available for members to rent, the alley floors were renovated in 2019, and the building has undergone further upgrades; and,

 

WHEREAS, for decades St. Henry’s Lyceum has hosted wonderful Christmas parties for members and children, and annual family summer picnics with tons of food and fun; and,

 

WHEREAS, the space still hosts duckpin bowling leagues, and organizes rounds of the 66 Card game - a Lyceum staple that only Arlington residents know how to play; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Lyceum is a strong backbone of Arlington community, and the only remaining Lyceum in the area, with membership passed down by generations with pride

 

WHEREAS, St. Henry's Lyceum boasts 300+ members today, and will forever be an icon of Arlington culture; and,

 

NOW THEREFORE IT BE RESOLVED, in recognition of the social impact of St. Henry’s Lyceum for the residents of Arlington, Pittsburgh, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, March 8th, 2025 to be “St. Henry Lyceum Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
