WHEREAS, Living Stones was established in 2012 as Christian-based nonprofit organization with a mission to address two contrasting challenges in the City of Pittsburgh: food insecurity and food waste; and,

WHEREAS, Living Stones works with local restaurants, businesses, and institutions to save surplus food, hindering waste and transforming it into warm, nourishing meals for those in need; and,
WHEREAS, Living Stones is driven to provide holistic support to individuals, not only physical hunger, but social and spiritual needs as well, offering an all-embracing approach to empowerment and wellness for every person they serve; and,
WHEREAS, many people served by Living Stones reside in food deserts or are affected by food insecurity due to economic hardship, including unhoused individuals and seniors on fixed incomes; and,
WHEREAS, Living Stones fosters connections among neighbors and strives to battle loneliness, create sincere relationships, and provide a link between individuals and essential services; and,
WHEREAS, by partnering with Mary, Queen of Peace Parish, in a shared commitment to address food injustice within the community, Living Stones has expanded its mission to the South Side of Pittsburgh; and,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does thank and commend Living Stones for their critical work in the Pittsburgh community; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare December 1, 2024 as “Living Stones Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
