WHEREAS, founded in a one-room schoolhouse in Shadyside in 1883, Shady Side Academy has become a leader in independent education in which students from pre-kindergarten through grade twelve are exposed to a vast curriculum of arts, sciences, and athletics; and,
WHEREAS, from its inception, Shady Side Academy has sought to “challenge students to think expansively, act ethically, and lead responsibly” and has created a community in which all involved acknowledge and accept the five guiding principles of honesty, kindness, responsibility, respect, and safety; and,
WHEREAS, in 1988 the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship began as one of the first international competitions to rank high school students individually in public speaking and debating. The five day event gives participants the chance to compete in oratory events and emphasizes the importance of communication and expression; and,
WHEREAS, from March 30th to April 5th, Shady Side Academy will host the 2016 World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship, in which approximately 125 students from high schools around the world will gather to promote a diversity of ideas and communication across cultures and nations.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Shady Side Academy for its dedication to educating the youth of our region and for hosting the 2016 World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare March 30th to be “Shady Side Academy World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
