Whereas, on September 5, 2006, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra held the final performance on their European tour, where they showcased the cultural achievement, of Pittsburgh; and
Whereas, The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has been an integral part of our city since it was founded in 1896. It has long been internationally renowned and has acted as an ambassador for Pittsburgh nationally and internationally; and
Whereas, at a time in which tightening school budgets sometimes threaten, shrink, or eliminate music programs, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has provided valuable opportunities for children to learn music, which can begin a life long love of the art. This includes the Student Side-By-Side program in which high school students rehearse and perform with their Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra counterparts; and
Whereas, The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has embarked on a second century of superb music making, with the support of a devoted and international audience. Over half a million people enjoy the orchestra's splendid performances each year.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does commend and congratulate the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for all of their outstanding work throughout Western Pennsylvania and congratulates them on the completion of their European tour. We are privileged to be the home of such a prestigious symphony and are happy for their return to Pittsburgh after performing abroad.
