Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend The Pittsburgh Branch of the NAACP for its endless contributions to our communities; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does herby proclaim Sunday, October 5, 2008 as "Freedom Sunday Worship Service Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, for nearly one hundred years, it has been the talent and tenacity of NAACP members that has saved lives and changed many negative aspects of American society; and
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Branch of the NAACP, under the leadership of M. Gayle Moss, has always had a strong relationship with the religious community. The Religious Affairs Committee works to give moral and ethical interpretation to civil rights initiatives and enlists the support of religious groups of all denominations; and
 
WHEREAS,  six years ago, the Pittsburgh Branch of the NAACP created the Freedom Sunday Worship Service. This annual event gives the organization the opportunity to award clergy throughout the City of Pittsburgh for their dedication to the people of our communities; and
 
WHEREAS, the recipient of the prestigious Pastor of the Year Award for 2008 is Reverend Delano R. Paige, pastor of the Rodman Street Baptist Church. Reverend Paige has traveled to several countries on the continent of Africa, preaching the gospel and has conducted evangelistic crusades across the country. Reverend Paige is a lifetime member of the NAACP, past President of the Eastern Region of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, and a board member of Lott Carey.
