Title: Now, Therefore, be it resolved that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby commends the Pittsburgh Duffers for overcoming the discrimination and adversity that for so long has shut African-Americans out of the golf arena. Their dedication and commitment to the game of golf and to the spirit of brotherhood has inspired many to follow in their legacy; and Be It Further Resolved, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim Tuesday, February 24, 2009 as "Pittsburgh Duffers Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the idea of the Pittsburgh Duffers (formerly called The Pittsburgh Dandy Duffers) was conceptualized in the living room of Mr. Gerald Fox.  Along with Mr. Fox, Henry Lee, Jack Kelly, Phil Kisnie, Edward English and Bill Tinsley came together to put forth the idea of creating an African American Golf Club; and
 
WHEREAS, shortly thereafter, the Pittsburgh Duffers were formed in 1950 and chartered in 1952; and  
 
WHEREAS, with the inspiration and leadership of the Pittsburgh Duffers, other African American Golf Clubs have joined in the social competition.  Many friendships have blossomed with teams hailing from Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Washington DC and Baltimore; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Duffers have sustained a tradition, as well as a love affair for the very game that spurred this band of golfers to come together. All original founding members are deceased except for Mr. Fox who will be turning 93 in April of this year.
