WHEREAS, Amnesty International, founded in London in 1961, is a Nobel Prize-winning grassroots activist organization that undertakes research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights; and,

WHEREAS, Amnesty International mobilizes public opinion among its ten million members worldwide, including in Pittsburgh, bringing attention to human rights abuses and six key objectives: women's, children's, minorities', and indigenous' rights, ending torture, abolition of the death penalty, rights of refugees, rights of prisoners of conscience, and protection of human dignity; and,

WHEREAS, Amnesty International USA Local Group 39 has been active in the Pittsburgh region since 1976 and supports the international mission by advocating for human rights reforms, demonstrating in support of domestic and international freedom, and contacting government officials in the U.S. and abroad to take action to stop human rights abuses; and,

WHEREAS, since its formal establishment, hundreds of thousands of people have participated in International Human Rights Day by taking part in Amnesty International's Global Write for Rights by writing letters to demand that the rights of individuals are respected, protected, and fulfilled on an international scale; and,

WHEREAS, Human Rights Day is celebrated by the international community each year on December 10th to commemorate the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human rights that preserves and cherishes the freedoms of all human beings; and,

WHEREAS, this year, Amnesty International Local Pittsburgh Group 39 is sponsoring the Annual Human Rights Festival and the 38th Write for Human Rights event at Calvary Episcopal Church on December 11, 2023, which asks for the release of prisoners of consc...
