WHEREAS, on March 20, 2008 the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh will celebrate "A Day of Inclusion" in honor of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination; and
WHEREAS, the Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on March 21st to remember that date in 1960 when 69 people were killed in Sharpeville, South Africa at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid "pass laws;" and
WHEREAS, the Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966 as a call on the international community to redouble it efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination; and
WHEREAS, the YWCA's event will celebrate the community's diversity through music, artistic expression, and spoken word; and
WHEREAS, the YWCA's Office of Racial Diversity and Inclusion empowers individuals, organizations and communities to engage in educational and communication opportunities that address racism, injustice, oppression, diversity, and inclusion

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and commends the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh for its efforts to promote diversity and inclusion; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares March 20, 2008, "A Day of Inclusion" in the City of Pittsburgh.
