Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the 2016 Women of Spirit for their contributions to our region and their lasting legacy as embodiments of Carlow University's mission; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 7th, 2016 to be "Carlow Women of Spirit Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Women of Spirit Award program was established in 1993 by Sister Grace Ann Geibel, Carlow University President Emerita. Named for the first "women of spirit" who founded the institution in 1929, the Women of Spirit Awards honor women for professional and personal leadership and for service to their communities; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. Barbara Baker, President & CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium and the Zoological Society of Pittsburgh, is being honored for her contributions to the Pittsburgh Zoo, the most visited cultural attraction in the region. Dr. Baker is one of only 24 women who direct major zoos and aquariums in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, Leslie C. Davis, Senior Vice President of UPMC and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Health Services Division, is being recognized for her legacy of leadership at UPMC. Ms. Davis has health care experience spanning over 30 years and has served as president of Magee-Women's Hospital of UPMC since 2004; and,

WHEREAS, Laura Ellsworth, JD, Partner-In-Charge, Global Community Service Initiatives at Jones Day, earns a Women of Spirit Award for both her contributions to Jones Day as one of Pittsburgh's top female litigators and also for her civic participation. Ms. Ellsworth has served on over a dozen community boards and spearheaded Jones Day's rule of law initiative around the world; and,

WHEREAS, Mary Lou McLaughlin, Creator and Founder of Family House, is being recognized for her devotion to creating and growing Family House, an organization providing supportive housing for adult patients and their families who travel to Pittsburgh to receive treatments for life-threatening illnesses. Under McLaughlin's tutelage, the organization has grown to include three facilities with a staff of eighteen; and,

WHEREAS, Marianne Cornetti is the 2016 International Women of Spirit Award recipient, one of the world's leading Verdi mezzo-sopranos. Ms. Cornetti is internationally r...
