WHEREAS, National Manufacturing Day is organized nationwide by the Manufacturing Institute in October of each year; and

WHEREAS, the day, commonly known as MFG Day, is manufacturing’s biggest annual opportunity to inspire the next generation, positively shift perceptions about the industry, and build the foundation for the manufacturing workforce of the future; and
WHEREAS, it empowers manufacturers to come together to convey their relevance in today’s ever-changing technology demands and to address their challenges to recruit skilled workers to help their communities and future generations thrive; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh has recently seen major growth in innovative sectors like robotics and autonomy and advanced manufacturing; and
WHEREAS, amid record, growing job openings in manufacturing, the collective efforts of New Century Careers, their 130-plus partner companies and workforce development groups are focusing on the advantages of these career paths; and
WHEREAS, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports average wages in excess of $49,000 for positions like metalworkers; and
WHEREAS, local resources and training are available to better prepare a diverse and inclusive array of candidates to adapt to the technology of the advanced manufacturing workplace; and
WHEREAS, for every $1 spent in manufacturing another $2.60 is added to the overall economy for the benefit of all;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, October 10, 2023 as “Manufacturing Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
