WHEREAS , the first annual Pennsylvania Week for the Animals is being held September 20-28, 2008 to celebrate the joy, service and love animals bring to our lives; and
WHEREAS, pet overpopulation continues to be a problem in Pittsburgh, and across the United States, this first ever event is being created to increase awareness about the importance of adopting pets from shelters and spaying and neutering your pets; and
WHEREAS, during Pennsylvania Week for the Animals, Pittsburgh organizations will be highlighting, the love and companionship of therapy dogs and the joy they bring to patients in nursing homes and hospitals; the importance of service animals and the aid they bring to their owners, including R.E.A.D assistance dogs who help young people to improve their reading skills; and
WHEREAS, also being honored during Pennsylvania Week for the Animals, are those animals which serve in law enforcement and are in service to our country; and
WHEREAS, local places of worship, in the Pittsburgh area, will, also, be offering blessing services for owners and their pets during Pennsylvania Week for the Animals; now

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council, of the City of Pittsburgh, does, hereby, recognize the many ways in which animals enhance the lives of people and does, hereby, commend the local organizations which support and promote the well-being of animals.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does, hereby, proclaim, the week of September 20-28, 2008, to be Pittsburgh Week for the Animals, in the City of Pittsburgh.
