Title: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh celebrates the Intel® International Science and Engineering Fair® and the Society for Science & the Public for their vital efforts to foster innovation in science and technology and for taking place in the City of Pittsburgh, where such innovation has always been a part of our heritage. THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 13-18, 2012 to be Intel® International Science and Engineering Fair® Week in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, The Intel® International Science and Engineering Fair®, a program of the Society for Science & the Public, will take place this year in Pittsburgh at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center; and

WHEREAS, Intel ISEF is the world's largest international pre-college science competition, annually providing a forum for more than 1,500 high school students from over 65 countries and territories to showcase their independent research; and

WHEREAS, the fair, then called the National Science Fair, was first conceived in 1950 and held in Philadelphia, becoming international in 1958 with Japan, Canada, and Germany joining in; and

WHEREAS, the participants of the Intel ISEF have emerged from a worldwide field of several million science fair participants during the past academic year in order to compete in 17 different categories: Animal Sciences, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Energy and Transportation, Engineering (Electrical and Mechanical), Engineering (Materials and Bioengineering), Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Mathematical Sciences, Medicine & Health, Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy, and Plant Sciences; and

WHEREAS, the top winner receives the Gordon Moore Award and $75,000, and the next two winners receive $50,000 awards, with many other awards granted for each category in first, second, third, and fourth places.
