WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society is working to prevent and detect cancer as well as provide information and support for those who are diagnosed; and
WHEREAS, out of the 1.2 million people in Allegheny County, around 8,000 will be diagnosed with cancer this year, and over 1,000 of those diagnosed will have colorectal cancer; and
WHEREAS, screening exams can result in the detection of most cancer, including colorectal, and increase the chances of successful treatment; and
WHEREAS, Cancer Survivors Day is a celebration of life to demonstrate that people do survive cancer. It is an opportunity for cancer survivors and their families, friends, and caregivers to share in the joy of a victory over cancer; and
WHEREAS, Cancer Survivors Day provides hope to those who are still fighting the disease and incorporates an educational portion to inform participants of ways to prevent cancer and the benefits of early detection; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the American Cancer Society for the preventative education, information, and support they offer to the public as well as the family, friends and caregivers of those who have been diagnosed.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Saturday, August 28, 2004 is hereby declared "Cancer Survivors Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
