WHEREAS, Dr. Peter Cooke has been a respected member of and contributor to the global theater arts community for over 30 years as an internationally recognized theater practitioner, administrator, and educator in Australia, Asia, and the United States; and,
WHEREAS, after joining Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama as Professor and Head in January 2009, Dr. Cooke has educated students who have gone on to win numerous national and international accolades for their contributions to the arts, including five Academy Awards; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Cooke has been involved and honored in a multitude of ways over the years, including leading the design team responsible for part of the Closing Ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics Games, serving as a member of external advisory boards at University of California-San Diego and Boston University, and receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2008; and,
WHEREAS, this year, in honor of his substantial service to the performing arts as an administrator and academic, particularly to theater and dance, Dr. Cooke was named a Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honors List, which is bestowed upon Australian citizens by the monarchy of Australia for achievements and meritorious service.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Dr. Peter Cooke for being named a Member of the Order of Australia and serving the local, national, and international communities through his work in theater and dance; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 30th, 2017 to be “Dr. Peter Cooke Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
