WHEREAS, on November 13, 2008, Carlow University will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its Weekend College Program and the 20th anniversary of its Accelerated Evening Program; and
WHEREAS, Carlow was the first institution of higher education in Southwestern Pennsylvania to develop accelerated adult education programs; and
WHEREAS, the Weekend College Program was established in 1978 to provide educational opportunities to adults outside of the regular workweek; and
WHEREAS, in 1983, the Hill College was established as an extension of the Weekend College Program, in order to better serve the community in close proximity to Carlow's campus, and to focus on African-American women; and
WHEREAS, Carlow created Carlow's Accelerated Program, or CAP, in 1988, to offer evening classes to adults seeking a degree; and
WHEREAS, today, Carlow's adult education programs have locations in Oakland, Greensburg, and Cranberry, which offer 18 different undergraduate majors to their more than 700 students, as part of their Adult Degree Center; and
WHEREAS, Carlow's Adult Degree Center programs promote lifelong learning, scholarship, and research, and serve men and women of all ages in the community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates Carlow University on the anniversaries of its adult education programs; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares November 13, 2008 "Carlow University Adult Degree Center Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
