WHEREAS, it is well established that hunger diminishes the capacity of children to learn, exacerbates poor health in seniors and saps the strength of the working poor; and
WHEREAS, 38 million Americans, including nearly 14 million children, are threatened by hunger in the United States; and
WHEREAS, more than 1,400,000 Pennsylvanians are living on the brink of hunger; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 20% of residents of the City of Pittsburgh are living below the poverty level and are therefore susceptible to the effects of hunger; and
WHEREAS, we in Pittsburgh are fortunate to have Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank working to eradicate hunger in our neighborhoods through designing and implementing innovative programs while continuing to meet day-to-day nutritional needs of our community; and
WHEREAS, in the last 25 years, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has developed into an organization that serves as a leader and a model for other food banks across the country; and
WHEREAS, on June 6, 2006, in an effort to build greater awareness of our nation's growing hunger crisis, thousands of events are being held nationwide by local food banks, community agencies, faith based organizations and food pantries, including locally, the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares June 6, 2006 "Hunger Awareness Day" in the City of Pittsburgh; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and its member agencies throughout the City for their service and commitment to the citizens of Pittsburgh over the last 25 years.
