WHEREAS, born in the Hill District of Pittsburgh as Adalyn Pakler and raised as the seventh of 9 children of Max and Rebecca Pakler, Adalyn Baraff is a born, bred and devoted Pittsburgher who is celebrating her 100th Birthday on July 4, 2021. Of all of her seven siblings...Benny, Hyman, Lena, Dora, David, Ester, Silvia and Pete...Adalyn and Silvia are the last survivor members of the Pakler siblings; and,

WHEREAS, educated at Moorehead Elementary School, Fifth Avenue High School and then Peabody High School when the family moved to the East End, Adalyn attended the Irene Kaufmann Settlement and was a member of Congregation B'nai Israel. While in high school, Adalyn was athletic and developed a love of swimming and played basketball at a time when girls were only permitted to play half court because it was assumed they were too delicate for full court; and,

WHEREAS, married for 50 years to Gerald Baraff and living in Squirrel Hill, Adalyn was a fine homemaker, a gourmet cook, an expert shopper and a savvy coupon clipper. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Brownie Group Leader and raised two successful children, Dr. Robert "Bobby" Baraff, a neurologist who graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, and Marjorie "Marjie" Baraff, a Ph.D in Institutional Policy from the University of Pittsburgh who taught at the Pitt Dental School and was on the Pitt's Women's Swim Team. Adalyn spent many hours attending her children's and later her four grandchildren's athletic events and has been a grand-babysitter extraordinaire and is now Great Grandmother to nine; and,

WHEREAS, outside of the home, Adalyn Baraff worked in the family business,
Baraff Brother's Furniture Store in East Liberty. She also worked in the office at the Armour Meat Packing Company, was a super saleswoman at Kaufmann's Department Store and at Saks Fifth Avenue. She was active in several civic organizations such as National Council of Jewish Women and served as an Off...
