WHEREAS, the Susan G. Komen organization was founded in 1982 from a promise between sisters, becoming the world’s leading nonprofit in the fight against breast cancer; and,
WHEREAS, Komen has invested nearly $3.6 billion in research, community health outreach, and policy initiatives in over 60 countries, and is the second largest funder of breast cancer research globally, following the U.S. government; and,
WHEREAS, through direct support services such as the Patient Care Center and the Financial Assistance Program, Komen has provided essential care and financial relief to over 220,000 individuals navigating breast cancer treatment; and,
WHEREAS, the annual “MORE THAN PINK Walk” unites communities across the country in shared strength, remembrance, and advocacy, bringing together survivors, caregivers, researchers, and supporters to raise awareness and critical funds; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to the annual walk in Pittsburgh, the Komen Foundation is holding the National 2025 Komen Virtual Walk Where You Are MORE THAN PINK Walk to be held on Saturday, October 25; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh community walks in solidarity with those affected by breast cancer, honoring survivors, remembering those lost, and fighting to end breast cancer through this local expression of global action; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Susan G. Komen Foundation for their unwavering dedication to ending breast cancer; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of October 2025 to be “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in the City of Pittsburgh.
