WHEREAS, the South Side Market House is located in historic Bedford Square in the South Side Flats neighborhood of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, the Market House, built in 1915 after the original 1893 structure was destroyed by fire, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of only two enclosed market buildings remaining in the City of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, through its century of use as both a commercial market and recreational space the Market House has sponsored numerous activities for the entertainment and benefit of the local community, ranging from diverse sports and leisure activities to accommodating events such as youth dances, the annual “Golden Gloves” boxing tournament, and semi-professional basketball games; and,
WHEREAS, in its current use, the South Side Market House serves as a vital senior center, hosting one of the most active and vibrant senior citizen communities in the City of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, in celebration of the Market House’s 100th anniversary there will be a Centennial Celebration held on Saturday, August 29th 2015 to commemorate this amazing building and the Pittsburghers who have come together over the generations to make it into the fantastic community asset that it has become; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby join the South Side Market House in their centennial celebration, and commends the hard work of those citizens and city employees who have worked to support and maintain this remarkable building and community; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, August 29th, 2015 to be “South Side Market House Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
