WHEREAS, Sarah L. Sumpter, lifelong resident of the City of Pittsburgh, has served over 40 years as a teacher and administrator in the Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS). She herself matriculated through PPS, graduating and serving as valedictorian from Carrick High School in 1968. Sarah went on to earn her Bachelors of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh and her Masters Degree from Carnegie Mellon University; and,
WHEREAS, while working at Carrick, she was an English teacher and activities director. She then went on to become vice principal. After her tenure at Carrick she went on to become the principal of Prospect Middle School. Sarah stayed there several years before arriving at Sterrett Classical Academy. She worked there for over 8 years and then made the decision to bring her career and years of service to a close; and,
WHEREAS, Sarah Sumpter was honored by the Carrick Alumni Association as a distinguished alumnus. Sarah has dedicated a large portion of her life to educating children and made sure that truly "No child shall be left behind"; and,
WHEREAS, Sarah faithfully dedicates herself to her church family, Carrone Baptist Church, where she serves as chair of the Trustee Board. She is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognize Sarah L. Sumpter for being a tireless champion of education and for her contribution to the City of Pittsburgh;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim July 1, 2012, to be designated, "Sarah L. Sumpter" day in the City of Pittsburgh.
