Title: WHEREAS in 1907, the parishioners of St. Richard parish founded their school on the second floor of the St. Richard Church building; and WHEREAS St. Richard's school would eventually be dissolved and renamed the St. Benedict the Moor School, which was officially dedicated on January 22nd, 1978; and WHEREAS over the past 100 years, St. Benedict the Moor School has sought to provide a comprehensive and balanced parochial education for its students, while maintaining a faith-based atmosphere that is characterized by a commitment to social justice, gospel values, and the preservation of cultural individuality; and WHEREAS St. Benedict the Moor School continues to be known locally for its strong support of moral values and academic excellence, thanks to the efforts of the Sisters of St. Joseph, along with the school's dedicated lay teachers; and WHEREAS during Catholic Schools Week which will take place from January 28th through February 3rd, 2007, St. Benedict the Moor Scho...

WHEREAS during Catholic Schools Week which will take place from January 28th through February 3rd, 2007, St. Benedict the Moor School, located at 2900 Bedford Avenue in the Hill District, will celebrate it's 100th anniversary with a week-long series of events; and
 
WHEREAS on Sunday, January 28th, at 11 am, Pastor Father Carmen D'Amico began the week of celebration by offering a mass at St. Benedict the Moor Church, located on Center Avenue and Crawford Street; and
 
WHEREAS on Saturday, February 3rd, there will be a special, closing dinner to be held at Epiphany Church Hall, located at 1018 Centre Avenue, with Mr. Derrick Hardy presenting as the keynote speaker.
 
 
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby wishes to show its support for St. Benedict the Moor School on its 100th anniversary, while additionally commending the school for its unwavering dedication to the education of generations of students within the City of Pittsburgh.
