WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Senior Games feature a spirit of competition and kinship among Pennsylvania seniors in a safe, productive, mentally and physically stimulating atmosphere; and
WHEREAS, the 27th Annual Pennsylvania Senior Games, held July 24th through July 29th at York, Pennsylvania welcomed 19 senior delegates from the City of Pittsburgh, representing the Citiparks SeniorInterests Program; and
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh SeniorInterests contingent brought home a total of 131 medals this year (56 Gold, 48 Silver, 27 Bronze); and
WHEREAS, the top overall male medal winners from the SeniorInterests Program were Robert Horton, age 86, representing the Lawrenceville Senior Center who won a total of 14 medals (13 Gold and 1 Silver), and James Cichra, age 80, representing the Sheraden Senior Center who also won a total of 14 medals (5 Gold, 5 Silver and 4 Bronze); and
WHEREAS, the leading female medal winner from the Citiparks SeniorInterests Program was Mary Szulborski, age 82, representing the Lawrenceville Senior Center who won 12 medals (5 Gold, 5 Silver and 2 Bronze); and
WHEREAS, the Citiparks SeniorInterests Program Athletes include: Barbara Avolio, Richard Barton, Elizabeth Callio, James Cichra, Bernice Dalton, Anna Dixon, Rita Ernharth, William Ernharth, Anne Horton, Robert Horton, Anna Lambert, Claudia Lawrence, Elsie Lowen, Rosalie Nesbitt, Mary Ellen Purnell, Janet Settnek, Shirley Steele, Mary Szulborski and Rosemarie Wilczynski; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends and congratulates all of the participants of the 2007 Pennsylvania Senior Games.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, September 11, 2007 to be "SeniorInterests Day" in the City of Pittsburgh, in honor of the Senior Center programs and their success representing the city during the Statewide competition.
