WHEREAS, the Carnegie Library Pittsburgh in Homewood (CLP-Homewood) - stands as a magnificent “hidden jewel” in the heart of our community, marking its 116th anniversary of dedicated service since its grand opening on March 10, 1910. Established by Andrew Carnegie, the CLP- Homewood was one of the largest Carnegie Libraries & the last one constructed in Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, in 2004, CLP-Homewood was designated a City of Pittsburgh historic structure and recognized by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation. In addition, this historical landmark underwent a major renovation by restoring its original woodwork, enhanced lighting, improved accessibility and upgraded auditorium; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Vivian Davidson Hewitt holds the distinction as the first black librarian in the Carnegie Library system. Having worked at CLP-Homewood in 1949, her role made libraries and learning more accessible to Pittsburgh’s Black population. And she became one of the area’s only women to be honored by the late Queen Elizabeth; and,
WHEREAS, started in the 90’s, the Friends of Homewood Library have been a constant source of support for CLP-Homewood, through fundraising, advocacy and volunteering; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and congratulate the Homewood Carnegie Library on their historical 116 years of achievements and education.
