Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize City Theatre and Director of Education and Accessibility Kristen M. Link for the valuable education programming and creative opportunities provided to young Pittsburghers and celebrate the publication of the first-ever Young Playwrights Anthology; and BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 23rd, 2017 "City Theatre Young Playwrights Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, now in its 42nd season, City Theatre creates a new generation of theater artists and audiences through its Young Playwrights program, which began in 1999.  It teaches and mentors students through playwriting and, thus, provides them with the necessary tools and platform to let their voices be heard; and,

 

WHEREAS, over time, these in-school efforts expanded to include the Young Playwrights Contest and Young Playwrights Festival, which allow middle and high school students from the Pittsburgh region to submit one-act plays that are reviewed and responded to by a national literary committee.  Six winners are selected to be fully produced with professional actors, directors, and designers annually; and,

 

WHEREAS, underwritten in part by the EQT Foundation, the 2016 EQT Young Playwrights Contest  featured over 300 submissions from 35 Pittsburgh-area schools and included student plays by Cavan Bonner, Julia Garhart & Brenna Sposito, Katrina Kudla, Abigail Over, Mehrnaz Tiv, and Jacob Voelker; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation generously supported the publication of these young artists’ work in the first-ever EQT Young Playwrights Anthology; and,
