WHEREAS, on November 2, 2007, Raymond Michael West, disarmed a man wielding a knife while riding on a bus through Oakland; and
WHEREAS, Mr. West, protected other passengers by helping a mother with her young child, as he positioned himself between her and the attacker, allowing them to move to safety; and
WHEREAS, Mr. West, struggled with the assailant, unarmed him, and held him on the floor until the police arrived, sustaining cuts on his neck and hand; and
WHEREAS, the 26 year-old Mr. West , resides in the Bloomfield neighborhood and is the father of four children.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Raymond Michael West and honors his courage; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares January 22, 2008, "Raymond Michael West Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
