WHEREAS, Steamfitters Local 449 represents more than 2,500 highly trained men and women who fabricate, install, and service piping systems throughout Western Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, the Steamfitters' heritage dates back to the late 1880s and their affiliations with the Knights of Labor, The National Association, and others, before officially joining the United Association as Steamfitter's Local 449 in 1913; and
WHEREAS, the Steamfitters played an important role in the American Labor Movement, fighting for many of the worker's rights and protections that we take for granted today; and
WHEREAS, organized labor has helped countless Americans receive better wages and benefits, such as health insurance and pension plans, so that workers could support their families; and
WHEREAS, the Steamfitters have evolved over the decades since 1913, mastering new skills and trades to keep pace with our modernizing economy; and
WHEREAS, on October 5, 2013, Steamfitters Local 449 celebrated their 100th anniversary at the David Lawrence Convention Center, to honor the memory of the 198 Charter Members and the countless others who helped strengthen the organization over the years; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor Steamfitters Local 449 for 100 years in the Greater Pittsburgh region; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, October 22, 2013 to be "Steamfitters Local 449 Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
