WHEREAS, Onala Recovery Center is celebrating 70 years of helping individuals and families impacted by substance use conditions, including the current opioid epidemic; and,

WHEREAS, founded in 1952 and incorporated in 1953 as a private social club for recovering alcoholics, Onala Recovery Center is now a full-service nonprofit, providing a safe community space where individuals with all types of substance use disorders and their loved ones can find resources, support and fellowship; and,
WHEREAS, Onala serves thousands of visitors a month in various stages of recovery, offering a safe, inclusive environment centered around peer-to-peer recovery; and,
WHEREAS, Onala Recovery Center strives to enhance the spiritual, social and economic welfare of our recovering community, educate on the disease of addiction, and provide lifesaving programs, activities and trainings for all those who seek help; and,
WHEREAS, in addition, they provide a central meeting place for support of out-of-town recovering substance abusers in a safe drug and alcohol-free environment. Onala Recovery Center also works with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to distribute free food to those suffering from food insecurity; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Onala Recovery Center for providing the community with a safe environment for all recovering individuals; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Tuesday, October 24, 2023 to be “Onala Recovery Center Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
