Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and congratulate the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens for its tremendous achievements in green initiatives and practices; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh further commends the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens for leading our city's charge to be the center of innovative, green building and development in the United States and around the world.

WHEREAS, the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens has flourished in its mission to teach and inspire visitors for more than 100 years; and,

WHEREAS, the Phipps Conservatory is perennially celebrated as one of this region's most important and beloved cultural assets, visited by more than 1.5 million people since 1993 alone; and,

WHEREAS, the institution has displayed a profound and dedicated commitment to the principles of sustainable building and green architecture from the drought resistant grass in front of the Welcome Center, to a series of conservatory firsts: the first LEED certified Visitor Center in a public garden and the first use of a fuel cell in a conservatory; and

WHEREAS, these achievements have culminated in the development of the 12,000 square foot Tropical Forest Conservatory opened in December 2006; a building which features new eco-technologies that make it a model for sustainable practices and construction for conservatories around the world; and

WHEREAS, the Tropical Forest Conservatory was one of only eight structures nationwide to receive a 2007 Beyond Green High Performance Building Award, presented by the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council, and accepted at the Building Museum in Washington, D.C. on January 16. The award honors the building's high performance design and construction making it the most energy efficient conservatory in the world; and,

WHEREAS, when the Conservatory opened on December 7, 1893, it was the largest conservatory in the United States, we are pleased and proud to report that today, January 22, 2008, it is the greenest.
