WHEREAS, June 3, 2004 has been designated National Hunger Awareness Day and is being celebrated here in the City of Pittsburgh, Market Square.
WHEREAS, National Hunger Awareness Day provides an opportunity for communities across the country to unite their efforts in disseminating information about urban and rual hunger and providing free- food resources in a continuous effort to minimize the persistent problem of domestic hunger at a local level.
WHEREAS, For the third consecutive year, food banks and food-rescue organizations, soup kitchens and food pantries, countless individuals, faith-based organizations and businesses will donate time, raise funds, and give food to help their neighbors.
WHEREAS, Individuals benefitting from the avialability of donated food range from infants and toddlers, school-age children and adolescents, single head-of-households, veterans, seniors and familes or individuals who are at risk for being victims of hunger.
WHEREAS, The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, the region's network of food provision agencies and Giant Eagle have joined with America's Second Harvest to raise awareness about children and adults who suffer the effects of hunger.
WHEREAS, According to 2000 Census data nearly eight percent of all families in Allegheny County live below the poverty level and 52 percent of families with a single, female head of household with children below the age of five live below the poverty level.
WHEREAS, According to 200 Census data nine percent of individuals 65 years of age and older in Allegheny County are living below the poverty level.
WHEREAS, The One Big Table event being held on June 3, 2004 at Market Square to Commemorate National Hunger Awareness Day, will bring together the voices of advocates to raise awareness in the general public about the needs of vlunerable people around the issue of food security.
