WHEREAS, the date of October 11th was designated in 1988 as “National Coming Out Day” to commemorate the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights; and,

 

Body

WHEREAS, every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age, or mental or physical disability; and,

 

WHEREAS, QBurgh was launched on October 11, 2020 by Jeff Freedman and Jim Sheppard as a news and community resource for the LGBTQ Community of Pittsburgh, providing valuable LGBTQ information and resources, and striving to bring diverse voices to the table; and, 

 

WHEREAS, QBurgh’s one year anniversary will be celebrated in partnership and collaboration with Point Park University’s Center for Media Innovation, Point Park University students, and the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia chapters of the National LGBT Journalists Association with an exhibit opening at the Center commemorating “50 Years of Coming Out”. The exhibit will feature photographs and publications of Pittsburgh’s LGBTQ history; and,

 

WHEREAS, over the past five decades, the rich ethnic, social and cultural heritage of the City of Pittsubrgh has been further enriched by the emergence of the LGBTQ Community which has become more visible and active in creating and promoting rights and opportunities as evidenced by the wide array of offerings in the areas of art, health care, law, the media, as well as professional, religious and social organizations; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend QBurgh for their work in the LGBTQ community of Pittsburgh; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council does hereby proclaim Monday, October 11, 2021, as "QBurgh Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
