WHEREAS, Karmiel is a city in Northern Israel, founded in 1964 as a development town and is the commercial, educational, cultural and industrial hub of the Western Galilee ; and,
WHEREAS, Karmiel, located in the Misgav region, was one of the first cities in Israel to be established according to an urban master plan consisting of self- contained neighborhoods and has grown to be a leader in the region in education, environmental protection and cultural opportunities. If its 52,000 residents 60% are native Israelis or veteran immigrants and 40% are more recent immigrants representing 75 countries; and;
WHEREAS, on May 23, 2006, the City of Pittsburgh entered into a Sister City agreement with Karmiel through the Pittsburgh Sister Cities Association at a ceremonial signing with Mayor Bob O'Connor and Mayor Adi Eldar. Karmiel has enjoyed a multi - year, multi- dimensional relationship with the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh through Partnership2Gether which, since 1995, has worked to build relationships between Pittsburghers and Israelis through cultural and academic exchanges that have included internships, an international tour stop from the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and youth and teen programming, and ;
WHEREAS, this year, Karmiel will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary . A delegation of the Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh leadership will be in Karmiel/Misgav for the annual steering committee meetings and will be present for the Karmiel Dance Festival, a major cultural event in Israel where thousands of people attend from all over the world; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh and the Jewish community of Pittsburgh for its dedication, support and commitment to the Israeli city of Karmiel though Partnership2Gether and congratulates the city of Karmiel for 50 remarkable years of growth and development; and,
