Whereas, in 1983, through the eyes of his vision, Earl V. Jones, Sr., a retired steel worker, founded Peace on Earth, initially called World Peace on Earth, as an annual, multi-media think tank for promoting peace, sponsored by National City Bank, the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Public Schools; and
Whereas, the 2004 contestants from 15 to 50 participating schools entered a short essay, a creative writing genre or art work in response to the theme, "How Can We Help Keep Illegal Drugs from Destroying our Peaceful Community?;" and
Whereas, the contest is administered by Dr. Ronald T. Bowes of the Pittsburgh Catholic Schools and Dr. Raymond McClain of the Pittsburgh Public Schools; and
Whereas, the review committee--Dr. Bowes and Sr. Mary Jo Mutschler, S.C., of the Pittsburgh Catholic Schools, Dr. McClain and other Pittsburgh Public School teachers: Mr. James Nickles, Resource Teacher for Social Studies; Dr. Leigh Tanner, Resource Teacher for Social Studies; Mrs. Joan Brindle, Arts Specialist; Mrs. Sylvia Wade, Elementary Literacy Specialist; and Dr. Dorothy Grier, Literacy Specialist for the Middle Schools--has selected the 2004 prize recipients; and
Whereas, 20 winners have been announced from elementary, middle and high school students, whose work will be displayed at their respective schools; and
Whereas, the Peace on Earth awards ceremony will be held on Friday, November 19, 2004, in the Gold Room of the County Courthouse at 9:00 a.m., which will also honor and thank all 2004 contestants.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT, Pittsburgh City Council joins the initiative for peace here in Pittsburgh, our nation and throughout the world that is fostered by the annual Peace on Earth contest, now in its 21st year; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, November 19, 2004 be declared Peace on Earth Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
