WHEREAS, Lawrence W. Kaplan, Class of 1953, will be honored at the 2003 University of Pittsburgh School of Law Alumni Dinner & Reunion On Saturday, October 18, 2003 ; and
WHEREAS, Lawrence W. Kaplan was appointed by the Governor of Pennsylvania as a judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County through the merit selection process in 1978, was subsequently elected to a ten year term in 1979, was retained for another term in 1989 and assumed Senior Judge status in August 1998; and
WHEREAS, Judge Kaplan has been recognized locally and nationally for his innovative decisions and programs in the domestic relations law area; and
WHEREAS, attorneys practicing in the Family Division in Allegheny County deeply appreciate and respect Judge Kaplan's knowledge of domestic relations law and his lengthy service and devotion to the Family Division; and
WHEREAS, Judge Kaplan has been a featured lecturer and author on child custody, mediation and other areas of domestic relations law and has received recognition and awards too numerous to list, such as the National Children's Rights Council's Chief Justice Warren E. Burger "Healer" Award for his national leadership in recognizing the rights of children to custody by both parents; and
WHEREAS, Judge Kaplan also has dedicated himself to serving his community by, among many other activities, his founding of the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition and working as a Trustee of the Rodef Shalom Congregation.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates the Honorable Lawrence W. Kaplan and declares Saturday, October 18, 2003 "JUDGE KAPLAN DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.
