Whereas, June 27th annually has been set aside each year to observe National HIV Testing Day, when the community is reminded "It's Better to know"; and
Whereas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that while some 40,000 Americans become infected with HIV every year, only one-third of these newly infected are aware of their condition; and
Whereas, the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA-US), the oldest coalition of people living with HIV/AIDS in the world and the oldest U.S. national AIDS organization, citing that those infected with HIV/AIDS have the right to live free from discrimination, endorse programs that promote awareness and understanding of the disease within communities as mechanisms for the fulfillment of this right; and
Whereas, the Southwestern Pennsylvania AIDS Planning Coalition, a local organization that has worked since 1992 to assess, define, plan for, stimulate development of, and evaluate comprehensive systems of high quality prevention, education, and care services which respond to the HIV epidemic, will provide for numerous HIV testing sites and HIV/AIDS awareness events in the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny county on and around June 27.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh recognizes and commends the Southwestern Pennsylvania AIDS Planning Coalition for continuing to educate the community on the affect of the HIV/AIDS virus.
