WHEREAS, Earth Day is an annual national observance designed to increase public awareness of and appreciation for the environment; and
WHEREAS, this Earth Day, it is important to pause and recognize an organization that has championed environmental causes in our community; and
WHEREAS, The Clean Rivers Campaign works every day of the year to raise awareness about the storm water runoff and sewage overflow issues in Allegheny County and to demand greener solutions to these problems; and
WHEREAS, through its work, Clean Rivers has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to education, advocacy, and civic engagement around this critical environmental issue; and
WHEREAS, Clean Rivers has brought together elected officials from all over the region, demonstrating that storm water issues don't end at municipal boundaries; and
WHEREAS, over the past several months Clean Rivers had held a speaker series, bringing experts on storm water management to Pittsburgh to discuss best practices and problem-solving strategies with local leaders; and
WHEREAS, Clean Rivers lobbying efforts led to ALCOSAN's request for an eighteen-month extension from the EPA that will enable them to incorporate green infrastructure improvements into their Wet Weather Plan.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize The Clean Rivers Campaign for expanding the spirit of Earth Day into tangible action; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 23, 2013 to be "Clean Rivers Campaign Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
