Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the International Day of Peace and thanks its local organizers; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares the week of September 20-26, 2009 as International Week of Peace in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the International Day of Peace was established by a UN resolution in 1981 and unanimously reaffirmed by the General Assembly in 2001; and
 
WHEREAS, the International Day of Peace, celebrated every year on September 21st, is a global observance when organizations, communities, nations, governments, and hundreds of millions of people around the world highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace; and
WHEREAS, it is the hope of the United Nations and all participants involved in the International Day of Peace that their activities will ultimately work to support a global ceasefire to occur annually on September 21st; and
 
WHEREAS, the United Nations Secretary-General has urged governments and citizens of the world to focus on the important issues of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation for the International Week of Peace 2009; and
 
WHEREAS, locally, the International Day of Peace has been observed for several years by numerous secular and spiritual activities, including Peace Poems and Peace Flag contests in public and private schools, awareness events at various colleges, and spiritual vigils at area churches, temples, synagogues and other places of worship; and
 
WHEREAS, this year, many individuals and organizations are planning to celebrate the day with activities that observe and honor the International Day of Peace, but also connect it to the peace potential of the actions of the upcoming G-20 summit; and
 
WHEREAS, the meeting of the G-20 on September 24th and 25th will take up many of the issues that will have a significant and lasting effect on global peace.
