WHEREAS, in 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson launched Negro History Week, during the second week of February, as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history. Today, we celebrate the month of February as “Black History Month,” educating our community and youth of the significant accomplishments and barriers of our African American leaders. This is an opportunity to acknowledge and examine the leadership, perseverance, and dedication of these leaders; and
Whereas, Mr. Billy Jackson, Founder and Program Director of Community Media, celebrates 14 years of establishment, providing film and video productions and experiences to the residents of the City of Pittsburgh, focusing especially on the inner city youths; and
Whereas, Mr. Jackson's goal has been to use media as a tool to reach out and help the youth to build character, self-respect and acceptance of diverse populations, as well as celebrate and preserve African-American culture; and
Whereas, Mr. Jackson stood as a mentor for approximately 50 interns, which have assisted Community Media, as they actively pursued a filmmaking career, learning first hand about the actual film and movie production; and
Whereas, Mr. Jackson has also filmed projects on the Three Rivers Arts Festival. He has recently completed productions for the City of Pittsburgh and in working independently on a project for ACLU and a documentary on Jonny Gammage.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby recognize and commend Mr. Billy Jackson for his ongoing efforts to educate and instruct the youth of the City of Pittsburgh, in film and video.
