WHEREAS, the Center for Minority Health at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health invites you to share in the celebration of the National Minority Health Month during the month of April, 2006; and
WHEREAS, the Center for Minority Health was established in 1994 in the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh with a generous grant from the R K Mellon Foundation; and
WHEREAS, this is an annual event collaborated between the Center for Minority Health, the Urban League of Pittsburgh, and more recently, the Healthy Church Network in celebration of National Minority Health Month. Churches continue to serve as community service centers in the African American Communities; and
WHEREAS, the vision of the Center for Minority Health is to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health by the year 2010. The focus this year is on seven top priority areas that have been identified by Federal Health officials: Cancer screening and management, infant mortality, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, adult and child immunization, and mental health; and
WHEREAS, the goals of the National Minority Health Month are to build public/private partnerships, foster cultural competency among health care providers, encourage health education and training and expand the use of state-of-the-art technology.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby recognize and commend the Center for Minority Health at the University of Pittsburgh, Graduate School of Public Health for their continued efforts in educating the public at large on issues relating to minority health and preventive measures that may decrease problems that ethnic and racial minorities face.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim the month of April 2004, as National Minority Heath Month.
