WHEREAS, believing that strong individuals and families create healthy communities, the mission of Pittsburgh's Jewish Family & Children's Service ("JF&CS") is to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals and families through psychological, employment and social services; and
WHEREAS, JF&CS impacts many people in our community, including frail older adults who need supportive care, parents in the midst of divorce trying to care for their children, families devastated by the effects of unemployment, and any one of us at any time who might encounter a personal problem; and
WHEREAS, JF&CS is known for its quick response to crisis, becoming one of the key agencies in Southwestern Pennsylvania coordinating relief and relocation for evacuees from Hurricane Katrina; and
WHEREAS, JF&CS was founded in 1937 and has been guided throughout its history by talented individuals who have achieved a high standard of excellence in lay leadership; and
WHEREAS, Irwin D. Wolf, prominent Pittsburgh civic leader and philanthropist, was JF&CS's first president, and was followed by a long line of dedicated and caring individuals including Stanley J. Kann, John H. Cohen, Mrs. Raymond Kaufman, Morris Balter, Louis J. Bloch, Esq., Robert Comins, Dr. J.E. Rosenberg, Samuel Frankel, David Kurtzman, Saul Shapira, Jack J. Rosenberg, Vigdor Kavaler, Marcus Aaron II, Gerald Ostrow, Arthur Nelkin, Sidney Busis, Dr. Howard A. Mermelstein, Mrs. Leonard Laufe, Mrs. Bernard Halpern, Joel Smalley, Edwin I. Grinberg, Esq., Jack L. Bergstein, Esq., Donald B. Butler, Dolores Roskies, Richard I. Halpern, Esq., Ronald G. Hartman, Esq., Dan B. Frankel, Lynn Snyderman, Esq., Michael H. Levin, Jeffrey W. Spear, Esq., and today, current president Mitchell Pakler; and
WHEREAS, to raise the much needed funds that enables JF&CS to continue its mission, on April 9, 2006, all of the past presidents of JF & CS will be honored at a gala celebration at the Pittsburgh Glass Center.
