WHEREAS, heart disease is the number one killer of women, yet only 13% of American women believe it is their greatest health risk; and
WHEREAS, according to the American Heart Association, 1.4 million Americans die from heart disease each year, while one in four women suffer from some form of heart disease; and
WHEREAS, Mending Broken Hearts is a community outreach partnership between the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center an the Highmark Foundation aimed at promoting awareness and prevention of heart disease among women 50 and older; and
WHEREAS, Mending Broken Hearts will provide free health screenings to women, evaluating current risk and recommending ways to reduce future risk; and
WHEREAS, the Mending Broken Hearts program is directed by Dr. Amit Patel of the UPMC Center for Cardiac Cell Therapy, Jean Sexton, Gwen Cochran, and Linda Johnson.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Highmark Foundation for their commitment to the community and the health of women in Allegheny County.
