WHEREAS, Pittsburgh's annual Saint Anthony festival will take place on Sunday, June 10th at Saint Stanislaus Kostka Church at 21st Street and Smallman Street in the Strip District from noon until 8pm; and
WHEREAS, the festival is a Catholic tradition, celebrated in cities and towns around the world but people of all faiths are welcome to come enjoy the food, music, and dancing and to watch the procession of the statue of Saint Anthony as it makes its way up Smallman Street; and
WHEREAS, this year's festival will feature musical performances by La Banda Rossa, Mirella the Musician, and The Jimmy Z. Trio, a mass in Italian at 1:30pm presided over by His Excellency Bishop Emeritus Anthony G. Bosco, food from local restaurants, a homemade wine contest, and fun activities for kids; and
WHEREAS, Saint Anthony of Padua is one of the Catholic faith's most beloved figures and was canonized as a saint less than one year after his death in 1231; and
WHEREAS, Saint Anthony was a noted voice for the poor and disenfranchised and lived a simple, austere lifestyle to show his commitment and solidarity to those less fortunate; and
WHEREAS, he is known as the patron saint of lost items and those that are questioning their faith and trying to find a way back and his shrine in Padua, Italy brings more than four million pilgrims a year, many who leave prayers asking for assistance with finding some long-lost item or person.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate the 2012 Saint Anthony Festival; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 10, 2012 to be "Saint Anthony of Padua Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
