WHEREAS, The Gateway Medical Society honors physicians who work with minority and socio-economically challenged populations in Southwestern Pennsylvania with the Oswald J. Nickens, M.D. Physician of the Year Award. This year they have unanimously chosen Dr. Frank Sessoms to receive this award; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Frank E. Sessoms, M.D. was raised in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, the oldest of 10 children born to Catherine and the late Frank L. Sessoms. He is married to Sandra L. Sessoms. Dr. Sessoms attended school in the Aliquippa School District.
WHEREAS, Dr. Sessoms attended Tennessee State University where he was active in numerous committees including the Student Union and University Council. After the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Sessoms received an award from Tennessee State University and the Air Force ROTC program for his valor and heroism in helping to save the ROTC Building at the university; and
WHEREAS, after completing his education, Dr. Sessoms came to Pittsburgh and matriculated into the Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Margaret's Hospital He has been practicing for approximately 30 years in the Pittsburgh area.; and
WHEREAS, through the course of his professional career, he has been active in numerous organizations including The NAACP , served as the Pittsburgh Black Action Chairman of the Board, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated and the African American Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sessoms has received numerous special awards and certificates. He has received the Outstanding Community Service Award, the American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award, the African American Heritage Award, and the Willie Stargel MVP Award twice; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby recognize and commend Dr. Frank Sessoms for his efforts as a great doctor for this city.
