WHEREAS, Gregory Sullivan Kottler, a resident of Crafton Heights, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during his junior year of high school and began recruit training at Parris Island in April 1996. Following his graduation in June 1996, he was assigned as an infantry rifleman to Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment at Twentynine Palms, California, having also served as his platoon's Catholic lay reader; and,
WHEREAS, Greg was deployed to Kuwait, Okinawa, and Thailand aboard the USS Dubuque, and Australia aboard the USS New Orleans. He participated in multinational operations and completed advanced military training. During Greg's service he was awarded a Meritorious Mast, Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with star, and achieved the rank of Sergeant; and, 
WHEREAS, following his honorable discharge, Greg returned to Pittsburgh to raise a family. He earned an AS degree with honors from CCAC in 2005 and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. He has worked as a fundraiser with numerous nonprofit organizations, including the DNC, Habitat for Humanity, PBS, and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, to name a few. He also worked as Development Associate at the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, Greg's current employer is one of our great national gems, the National Aviary, where he began as a Database Manager. Over the past 9 years, his position has grown and he now serves as the Manager of Donor Relations, a role that is instrumental in fulfilling the aviary's mission to inspire respect for nature through an appreciation of birds; and,  
WHEREAS, in addition to his nonprofit work, Greg has long been committed to community service-from his days as a Boy Scout to serving as a Judge of Elections in Allegheny County since 2016. He also serves on the Pittsburgh Citizen Police Review Board, and is a 2023 graduate of the City's Citizens Police Academy; and,
