WHEREAS, the art of theatre provides an enriching experience for young people as it stimulates their imaginations and establishes a forum for the creative exchange of ideas; and
WHEREAS, Taylor Allderdice High School has selected William F. Brown's musical "The Wiz" for the purpose of introducing students to all aspects of musical theater as an art form and involving them in the full-scale development of a production; and
WHEREAS, "the Wiz" is Mr. Brown's modern, urban response to L. Frank Baum's classic novel "The Wizard of Oz" set to a modern score of soul, jazz, and soft rock; and
WHEREAS, young people in the City of Pittsburgh have had to deal with the struggles explored in the musical, including finding the courage to face the challenges of adulthood and rising above poor social expectations; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, acknowledges the esteemed playwright William F. Brown, producer Bernadine Srocki, and the cast and crew of the Allderdice production of "The Wiz" for bringing this classic tale to the stage; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, in honor of this artistic achievement, does hereby declare April 25, 2006, to be the "The Wiz" Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
