WHEREAS, Thomas E. Starzl, M.D., PH.D. is known to most as the "Father of Transplantation" and a thinker who has been, and continues to be, well ahead of his time; and
WHEREAS, through more than four decades dedicated to the advancement of clinical research and patient care, Thomas E. Starzl, M.D., PH.D. pioneered groundbreaking work in organ transplantation and anti-rejection therapies, shaped and developed UPMC's renowned and thriving organ transplantation programs, and trained many of the physicians who now lead organ transplantation programs worldwide; and
WHEREAS, the innovative work of Thomas E. Starzl, M.D., PH.D. has earned UPMC the moniker Transplant Capital of the World and Dr. Starzl the well deserved scientific recognition of the highest caliber as a recipient of the 2004 National Medal of Science; and
WHEREAS, The City of Pittsburgh is extremely proud of the achievements of Thomas E. Starzl, M.D., PH.D. and honored that he elected to base the majority of his academic and clinical career in this great city.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh acknowledges and commends the work and accomplishments of Thomas E. Starzl, M.D., PH.D.; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim Tuesday, February 28, 2006 as "Thomas E. Starzl, M.D., PH.D." in the City of Pittsburgh.
