WHEREAS, June 14th is Flag Day; and
WHEREAS, on April 9, 1896, 103 charter members began the Allegheny Elks Lodge No. 339 - just eleven years after the first Flag Day celebration; and
WHEREAS, the members of Allegheny Elks Lodge No. 339 are known for their patriotism, among many other outstanding qualities, many having served or volunteered in the many wars and conflicts of our great nation; and
WHEREAS, the Flag Day observance of Allegheny Elks Lodge No. 339 and their Ladies' Auxiliary has been an eagerly anticipated community event since 1909; and
WHEREAS, the motto of the Elks is "The faults of our brothers we write upon the sand, their virtues upon the tablets of love and memory"; and
WHEREAS, this year, the Allegheny Elks Lodge No. 339 Flag Day celebration will be on Sunday, June 12, at 2:00 p.m., with ceremonies by Lodge Chaplain George Martin and the other Lodge officers, with entertainment by the Pittsburgh Banjo Club; and
WHEREAS, the Flag Day celebration is planned with precision and presided over by Chaplin George Martin, chairperson of committee, along with Lodge Esquire Charles Konefal, with additional enthusiastic leadership provided by Exalted Ruler Bill Weaver and his three chairs - Leading Knight Matt Gailey, Loyal Knight Joe Brown, and Lecturing Knight Brad Richards;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes Allegheny Elks Lodge No. 339 and their celebration of Flag Day, and hereby declares June 12, 2011, to be "Allegheny Elks Lodge No. 339 Flag Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
