WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Donnybrook comes to town on Friday, March 15th at the Priory’s Grand Hall on Pittsburgh’s Historic North Side. This marks the tenth anniversary of the first Pittsburgh Donnybrook; and,

WHEREAS, Donnybrook is an amateur boxing match between the Drimnagh Boxing Club, Located in south Dublin city Ireland, and Pittsburgh area amateur boxers. The event benefits the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh, the Drimnagh Boxing Club and Pittsburgh area amateur boxing organizations; and,

 

WHEREAS, boxing is Ireland’s most successful Olympic Sport. The idea to bring an Irish boxing team to Pittsburgh came from the late Michael Diven. He envisioned an event to empower young people through boxing. In cooperation with the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh, his vision became a reality known as the Donnybrook; and,

 

WHEREAS, during the event, the following individuals will be honored for their volunteerism and commitment to their Irish community: Chris Riskus - Lifetime Achievement Award; Colleen Bowers - Sr. Michele O’Leary Leadership Award; Michael E. Lamb - Taoiseach Award; and Larry Brophy - Fáilte Award; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Pittsburgh Donnybrook and their commitment to their Irish and boxing community; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Friday, March 15, 2024 to be “Pittsburgh Donnybrook Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
