Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Pittsburgh City Council supports the efforts of the American Cancer Society's Youth Tobacco-Free Institute in reducing tobacco use among youth; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that November 4, 2004 be declared Youth Tobacco-Free Institute Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

Whereas, on Thursday, November 4, 2004, the American Cancer Society is hosting its Youth Tobacco-Free Leadership Institute, sponsored by HighMark®, Tobacco Free Allegheny and GMH, at the Holiday Inn Select University Center in the City of Pittsburgh; and
 
Whereas, the Youth Tobacco-Free Leadership Institute utilizes the  Coordinated School Health Model in a training initiative for high school faculty and students in grades 9-11, throughout the city, to provide the skills and knowledge they need to become effective advocates, peer educators or community activists for key tobacco issues at their respective schools and for fellow youth in the community-at-large; and  
 
Whereas, researchers estimate that if behaviors known to prevent cancer were practiced regularly, two thirds of cancer would not occur annually.
 
Whereas, the fruits of the Youth Tobacco-Free Leadership Institute will be implemented in the participating schools through the Coordinated School Health Model, which will  guide faculty and students in identifying basic cancer triggering behaviors, disseminating cancer prevention messages, and positive ways to change cancer triggering behavior; and
 
Whereas, the Youth Tobacco-Free Leadership Institute believes that in conjunction with the Coordinated School Health Model, it  empowers youth  to fight tobacco use for a healthier adulthood; and
 
Whereas, the Youth Tobacco-Free Leadership Institute will showcase participant projects and findings at the Holiday Inn Select University Center on Friday, March 11, 2005.
